Where to start with business automation

A useful first automation usually starts with an ordinary frustration: copying an enquiry into a spreadsheet, sending the same follow-up, or assembling a weekly report. Look for work that happens regularly, follows a clear rule, and has a result your team can check. Start with one process rather than an entire department.
Describe what happens today before deciding what should happen automatically. Define the trigger, the information required, the person responsible, and the expected outcome. Check the exceptions too. An incomplete form, a duplicate record, or a missing approval should have a clear route back to a person.
Keep a human review step wherever a mistake would be difficult to reverse. A system might prepare a draft, flag an unusual record, or organize incoming requests while someone makes the final decision. Automation does not need to remove every manual step to make work easier.
Run a small trial alongside your existing process. Compare the time involved, the quality of the result, and how often someone has to intervene. Ask the people doing the work what still feels awkward. Once the process is reliable and easy to understand, document it and decide whether another task is ready for the same treatment.
